We have already seen the trailer for Captain America: The First Avenger, and in it we got our first glimpse of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull. Unfortunately it was not the clearest glimpse, as most of the trailer focused on Chris Evans and his transformation from skinny Steve Rogers to the living embodiment of our great nation, Captain America. While it was entertaining to see Captain America beat up some lackeys, we all know what we really want to see is him face to face with the main villain, the Red Skull. Entertainment Weekly gave us at least half of that wish by showing the first full costume picture of Hugo Weaving as the Red Skull.
I have to say I am extremely impressed by the look of the Red Skull. Just hearing the description of a Nazi guy with a red skeleton face, it would be easy to picture a somewhat ridiculous looking villain. That is definitely not the case here, the Red Skull looks menacing as hell. Perhaps the best part of the Red Skull costume is that he is clearly recognizable as Hugo Weaving. Sure, there is definitely a lot of makeup obscuring his features, but that is clearly his expression, perhaps looking disdainfully upon a henchman who left his fly open. There are still quite a few questions about Captain America: The First Avenger, which hasn’t impressed quite as much as Thor, but it really seems like they hit a home run with the Red Skull.
2010 has drawn to a close and many of us are still optimistic about our lists of resolutions. This is because a new year brings with it new possibilities and new hope. This year we will finally be able to shed those unwanted pounds. This year we will find true love. This year we will poop out diamonds and suddenly become irresistible to the opposite sex. Well, most of those resolutions will be abandoned by the end of the week, but one thing that can be said is 2011 should be a great year for movies, especially comic book movies. Even if you are perfect already and don’t have any changes to make in this coming year, you should still be looking forward to the rest of 2011 simply because of these movies.
Thor
We have already seen the trailer for Thor, and it looks amazing. Marvel has had some success with their superhero franchises, most notably with Iron Man and Spider-Man, and it definitely looks like Thor will add to that success. With big names such as Natalie Portman and Anthony Hopkins involved with Thor, it is very easy to be optimistic. Add the fact that Chris Hemsworth looks every inch the petulant but heroic God of Thunder and we should have an exciting movie on our hands.
Captain America: The First Avenger
Captain America: The First Avenger has been somewhat overshadowed by Thor, but it is Captain America who has more pressure to succeed. The reason for this is simple, all these Marvel movies are leading up to an Avengers movie that will feature many Marvel superheroes. As the title of his movie suggests, Captain America is an integral part of the Avengers team. I see no need to worry about the success of Captain America though, seeing Chris Evans battle Nazis as a patriotic super soldier should entertain every red, white, and blue blooded American.
Your Highness
Simply put, Your Highness looks like it will be the funniest movie of 2011. Danny McBride and James Franco form a great comedy duo, as shown briefly in Pineapple Express. It will also help that David Gordon Green, the director of Pineapple Express, will also be directing Your Highness. Sure, this is a crude type of humor, finding comedy in masturbation jokes and foul language. That doesn’t make it less funny, and we will get to see Natalie Portman in a thong. It’s pretty much been decided that whatever movie she is in will become one of the most anticipated movies for that year.
The Hangover 2
In the running for comedy of the year will be The Hangover 2. Movies about guys getting drunk and doing ridiculous things relatively consequence free that we could never get away with in real life are always entertaining. What will make this movie great is the same thing that made the first one hilarious; the cameos. It is rumored that Ken Jeong and Mike Tyson will have repeat appearances, and Liam Neeson and Bill Clinton will be showing up to party as well. While there is controversy about Mel Gibson being dropped from the movie, I think Slick Willy will be plenty entertaining to make up for it.
Super 8
I’m not sure what I can say about Super 8 other than it is being directed by J. J. Abrams and it is about Area 51 in 1979. Those are about the only details of this movie that anyone knows at this point. Despite the lack of information, I dare you to watch this trailer and not agree that it is going to be awesome.
Green Lantern
I will admit that I am biased about Green Lantern. I am automatically assuming that Green Lantern will be awesome for several reason. First, I love comic books and Green Lantern is one of my favorite superheroes. Second, Ryan Reynolds is my man crush. With those two things combined, I can’t imagine anything resulting except for greatness. I am also pretty sure everyone else will enjoy Green Lantern because it is a movie about an intergalactic space cop hunting down alien criminals AKA the best idea anyone has ever had, ever.
Sucker Punch
Zack Snyder has gained a reputation for visually appealing and entertaining movies, and rightly so. Sucker Punch will add to that list of movies. The trailer has shown it will be stunning visually, and considering that it is basically Alice in Wonderland meets foxy boxing I don’t think the entertainment value will be anything to worry about. Any movie about a bunch of attractive and crazy girls trying to bust out of an asylum by fighting dragons, flying planes, and doing backflips in skimpy outfits will be pretty popular.
The Green Hornet
The biggest question about The Green Hornet is how believable Seth Rogen will be as a superhero. The part that people have to understand is that Seth Rogen won’t really be the superhero in the “guy who kicks a lot of ass” sense. Those ass kicking duties will be handled by Jay Chou as Kato, who will deliver many side flip kicks to the top of criminals’ heads. Seth Rogen is just the guy who funds the operation, has his heart in the right place, and will occasionally crack a joke or a bad guy’s skull. If people can accept this, than The Green Hornet will be a very entertaining action comedy. Plus it has the Black Beauty, one of the most awesome cars to ever be invented.
Marvel has been putting out quite a few superhero movies in preparation for their big Avengers movie event, where all their heroes will be brought together. The next installment by the Marvel movie men will be Thor, Marvel’s take on the Norse god of thunder. The basic take on Thor here is that Asgard is a realm outside of earth with technology so advanced that it is basically indistinguishable from magic. Since the Asgardians visited earth and appeared so advanced, they were worshipped as gods by the Norse. Parts of the movie will take place in Asgard as Thor has the Norse god equivalent of teenage rebellion and part of the movie will take place on earth when Thor’s dad Odin puts him in Norse god timeout. Wherever Thor is taking place, it looks great, especially the scenes with Natalie Portman. Chris Hemsworth is also a suitably large Thor, I can totally see a man of his size kicking wholesale ass.
If you were not blown away by that trailer then I don’t think we can be friends. It has Anthony Hopkins as a firm but fair Odin, Chris Hemsworth as a petulant/heroic/awesome Thor, and Natalie Portman as the hot nurse. The scenes all look great visually, especially the shots of Asgard. All in all, it looks like Thor has everything it needs to be Marvel’s next big hit and to cause even more excitement for the upcoming Captain America and Avengers movies.
Many people think of the San Diego Comic Con as that place where fat guys dress up as Batman and look at each other’s comic book collections. This is only partly true. The San Diego Comic Con has grown far larger than a simple gathering of comic book fans, and has also grown to include types of media other than comic books. One of the biggest parts of the San Diego Comic Con these days is movie previews. Comic book movies have grown very popular, so producers use the San Diego Comic Con as a way to promote their movies before release. This means we get to see sneak peeks of movies and get some extra details on the production process. Here are some of the movies that will be featured, or we at least hope will be featured, at the San Diego Comic Con.
Megamind
Megamind is the latest DreamWorks production. This movie will answer the often asked question of what happens if a villain kills his heroic nemesis. With a cast including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, and Brad Pitt, Megamind is looking like it will be quite the entertaining movie. The first day of Comic Con features a panel dedicated to Megamind so we can expect some sneak peeks to be released. Maybe we will also find out why they changed the name of the movie from Oobermind to Megamind after they had released promotional materials.
The Green Hornet
We recently showed The Green Hornet trailer on here, so we can expect there to be a lot more Green Hornet news at Comic Con. I am personally hoping they show off the car used in the movie, a 1966 Imperial nicknamed Black Beauty. Expect another trailer to be released at Comic Con, giving us a better look at how Seth Rogen will handle the hero role. The trailer looks promising, but Comic Con will give us a better idea of what to expect from this movie.
Thor
It is no secret that Marvel is putting out movies featuring major heroes in order to make the big Avengers movie in the future. The Thor movie has been somewhat overshadowed by the Captain America movie, but Comic Con is sure to take a look at both. Chris Hemsworth will be playing the role of Thor, and so far we have just seen one picture of him in costume and no trailer. Hopefully Comic Con will fix that and give us plenty of information on the Norse God of Thunder. I would also like to see some information on Chris Evans and the Captain America movie, such as if Chris Evans will be cracking his usual jokes in this movie. Maybe Marvel will also explain why they like actors named Chris so much, I might have to get a name change.
Salt
San Diego Comic Con isn’t just about comics anymore, and as a result many movie studios bring special sneak peeks of their movies to the convention. One movie that will be featured is Angelina Jolie’s action thriller Salt. It will be interesting to see the Russian spy angle discussed, especially considering the fact the United States just found some real life Russian spies. A case of life imitating art indeed. More importantly, Angelina Jolie still looks super hot.
Deadpool
I don’t know how much Deadpool will be discussed at Comic Con, especially considering the fact that the star of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, will be busy promoting his role as Green Lantern over on the DC side of things. It is hard to imagine this movie project not being brought up at some point considering the support given by fans and Ryan Reynolds himself. Hopefully a production schedule will be released at Comic Con, but there is definitely no guarantee on that.
The Expendables
Another non-comic movie that will be featured at Comic Con is The Expendables. I really want to see another trailer for this movie, because it will be three minutes of ass kicking. I don’t care what the plot is, a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Jason Statham is going to be awesome. This is definitely not going to be a movie for intellectuals, but it will be amazing nonetheless.
We here at HumorDistrict will definitely be keeping an eye on movie news coming from the San Diego Comic Con, so you can look forward to updates on all the movies discussed here and more.
With the outpouring of comic book movies recently, one has almost been forgotten. Jonah Hex has not had much news, at least news that many noticed with the upcoming release of Iron Man 2 and the announcement that Chris Evans will be playing Captain America. Now Jonah Hex is trying to steal back some of that limelight when they premier the first trailer this Thursday on the SyFy Channel.
It is fairly surprising that a movie starring Josh Brolin and Megan Fox has been discussed so little, but talk should begin to stir up again with the premier of the trailer. Jonah Hex is also one of the more violent comic books around, so this movie promises to have plenty of action. All in all, it seems like Jonah Hex has potential to be a quality movie, but has simply been lost with the emergence of other big name comic book movies. It will definitely have a different feel than Iron Man and Captain America, mainly because the plot focuses on a scarred bounty hunter in the wild west with a hint of the supernatural thrown in. Chances are Jonah Hex will remain overlooked, but I for one am eagerly awaiting the release of the trailer and the movie. Jonah Hex opens June 18th in theaters everywhere.
Chris Evans has been discussed a lot recently, mostly for his part as Jensen in the upcoming The Losers movie and his casting as Captain America in The First Avenger: Captain America. As you might have noticed, both of those movies are based off of comic books, which seem to be a recurring theme throughout Chris Evans’ career. Let’s take a look at some other comic book related roles Chris Evans has had over his career.
Johnny Storm/The Human Torch – Fantastic Four
Chris Evans broke into comic book movies with his role as Johnny Storm AKA The Human Torch in the Fantastic Four movies. Nobody will mistake the Fantastic Four franchise for good movies, but Evans was actually a perfect fit for Johnny Storm. He was a perfect mix of headstrong, playful, and loyal to pull the character off. Also, the ladies loved him. In his first comic book movie, Chris Evans was a bright spot in an otherwise mediocre film. He played Johnny Storm once again in the sequel, 4: Rise of the Silver Surfer, and while that movie was an improvement on the first, it still wasn’t good. Now that Chris Evans is going to be playing Captain America, don’t expect to see him around for any reboots of the Fantastic Four franchise.
Lucas Lee – Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World
Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World has not come out yet, but Chris Evans has jumped into this comic book movie as the character Lucas Lee, an evil skateboarder. This should be an interesting comic book role for Evans as we have not seen him play a villain yet, he’s always been one of the good guys. Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World is fairly lighthearted, so we should still be able to see Chris Evans’ playful side, especially considering the fact Lucas Lee is based off of skateboarder/actor Jason Lee. You might remember him from every Kevin Smith movie and My Name is Earl.
Nick Gant -Push
Push was not based off of a comic book, but it has super powered individuals and that is close enough for me. Push dealt with people who had powers like being able to see the future, yell loud enough to kill somebody, and move things with their minds. We actually got to see a more serious side of Evans in this movie as he played a more reluctant hero who didn’t have much of a sense of humor. Ladies still loved him. Push was enjoyable, not great, but it had plenty of scenes with Chris Evans either kicking ass or getting his ass kicked. It also featured Dakota Fanning being a creepy little girl.
Casey – TMNT
For those of you who don’t know, the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles didn’t start out as a Saturday morning cartoon, but rather as a comic book created by Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird. The comic book is quite a bit darker than the cartoons and movies, and as expected TMNT did not get very dark. One of the darker characters in that movie, however, was Casey. If you don’t remember he was the guy with the hockey stick and old school hockey mask who helped the turtles beat up other ninjas. If that didn’t clear things up for you, he was the turtles’ human friend who didn’t have breasts. Alright, now that we are all on the same page we can all agree that he did a good job in the movie as the angry guy who wasn’t Rafael. TMNT was definitely geared toward a younger audience, but Chris Evans and everyone else made it enjoyable for all audiences.
Captain America – The Avengers
All of Chris Evans’ comic roles have been leading up to this moment. After The First Avenger: Captain America, Chris Evans will be playing Captain America in the biggest comic book movie event ever. The Avengers will take all of the characters from the various Marvel movies we have seen and put them together as a team of superheroes. Chris Evans has arguably the most important role as Captain America, the leader of the team. We will have to wait and see if his experience in various roles in many comic book movies has prepared him for this moment.
The Losers is the latest comic book to be made into a movie, and it is shaping up to be an entertaining movie. Chirs Evans will be particularly interesting as he plays the character Jensen, a wise-cracking tech expert who can also kill you very easily. It’s like his role as the Human Torch in Fantastic Four, except less moody, more hilarious, and hopefully in a movie that doesn’t suck. Check out the trailer for yourself, it looks pretty good.
What makes this role particularly interesting for Chris Evans, is the fact that he will soon be suiting up as Captain America. Judging from the trailer, Chris Evans looks the part for Steve Rogers, but he might have to bulk up a little bit before he starts defending our freedom as Captain America. It also seems like he will have to reign in the comedy a bit, Cap is a pretty serious guy.
Getting back to The Losers, it will also be interesting to see Cougar, one of the coolest snipers ever. What most people are probably excited about, however, is the fact that Zoe Saldana will be playing Aisha. Zoe Saldana is pretty damn hot, even when she was a CG blue cat person in Avatar. I will probably go see any movie featuring this:
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Marvel has made an offer to Chris Evans to play Captain America. Evans has some experience with Marvel, playing Johnny Storm in the Fantastic Four movies. He was also in the superhero type movie Push and will be in comic book movies Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World and The Losers. That sounds like a pretty good comic book movie resume, even if the Fantastic Four movies weren’t very good. Chris Evans definitely looks the part, and let’s face it, anyone who isn’t Channing Tatum playing Captain America is good news. Marvel has yet to confirm this report, but Chris Evans does seem like a good choice.
Captain America might have the most casting rumors of any movie coming out in the foreseeable future. Apparently it is rather difficult to cast somebody to play an iconic American legend with a very vocal fan following. Names rumored to have been considered for the role of Captain America include John Krasinski AKA Jim Halpert from The Office, Ryan Phillipe, and Channing Tatum.
John Krasinski is now officially out, but much to the protest of fanboys everywhere, Channing Tatum is still being considered for the role. Channing Tatum is a terrible actor. It had to be said. It is hard to see anybody on Marvel’s casting list playing such an iconic character as Captain America, which is perhaps why it has taken so long for information on the casting to become available. The fact that they are taking their time with this decision is a good sign, as they are waiting to find the right man for the part.
Hugo Weaving has signed on to play the part of the Red Skull, Captain America’s archenemy. Hugo has proven himself to be a very good actor, so it is hard not to be pleased about this casting decision. It is another step in the right direction of filling out Captain America’s cast. Let’s be honest for a second though. We know that it is not going to be Ryan Phillipe, or Channing Tatum, or even my favorite prospect, Chris Evans. Marvel is obviously just waiting for Ryan Reynolds to finish up with the Green Lantern and Deadpool movies so he can take the mantle of Captain America. You heard it here first folks, Ryan Reynolds is Captain America. And every other superhero.
Screen Rant’s Vic Holtreman has been a busy bee recently. He took all the footage from the Iron Man 2 trailers that have been released and made one super trailer out of it. If you were somehow not excited about Iron Man 2, then I feel confident saying this trailer will change your mind. We get good footage of Robert Downey Jr. being awesome as Tony Stark and doing his thing as Iron Man, Mickey Rourke being foreign as Whiplash, and Scarlett Johansson killing some dude with her thighs as Black Widow. I am especially excited about that part. Vic, you have done excellent work here. Now we all expect to see similar trailers when Thor and Captain America come out.
