Lovable Movie Idiots

Posted by Jordan On August - 13 - 2010

Dinner for Schmucks is a very entertaining movie, if you haven’t seen it yet I recommend that you go do that. I’ll wait until you get back. It was good wasn’t it? The main reason for that was Steve Carell’s character Barry was hilarious. There is something very endearing about good natured idiots in movies, we enjoy cheering for them. Maybe we think if those schmucks can make it life, then so can we. Steve Carell isn’t the first person to make a career based off of dimwitted characters. These other actors will always be known as hilarious dumb guys, whether they want or not.

Jim Carrey

Jim Carrey made a name for himself in Dumb and Dumber. That launched his career into playing characters that were lovable, but not too bright. One of his best performances was in Ace Ventura: Pet Detective. Sure he had some Sherlock Holmes skills in being able to identify animal feces, but he was still an idiot. A lovable idiot. That is the way we want to remember Jim Carrey, despite his attempts to establish himself as a serious actor. It just wasn’t meant to be, Jim, it just wasn’t meant to be.

Rob Schneider

Rob Schneider has always been a goof. One of his earlier roles was playing a very entertaining incompetent criminal opposite Sylvester Stallone in Judge Dredd. After that he had numerous background roles in Adam Sandler as various dumb guys. His portrayal of dumb guys was so popular that he started to star as dumb guys in his own movies, most notably Deuce Bigalow: Male Gigalo.

Rowan Atkinson

Rowan Atkinson is best known as Mr. Bean. Atkinson himself describes Mr. Bean as a child in an adult’s body, so you can kind of figure out Mr. Bean’s IQ from that. This bumbling man-child is hilarious nonetheless, and remains popular in Atkinson’s native England along with the United States. Anytime we get to see Rowan Atkinson put on his dunce cap promises to be an entertaining experience.

Seth Rogen

Seth Rogen is the below average guy that all of my fellow underachievers can appreciate. He enjoys some marijuana from time to time in his movies, he has some bad ideas, but at least he’s funny. And when I say funny I mean Seth Rogen has some of the best one-liners I’ve heard in a movie. He definitely makes up for his lack of general intelligence in movies with his ability to craft a well timed joke. Plus we can also laugh at the fact he’s overweight. Anything to make us feel better about ourselves.

Johnny Knoxville

Nobody has done a better job in building a career out of being an idiot than Johnny Knoxville. He started on the show Jackass, where he and others pulled stupid and dangerous pranks that made us giggle. Johnny Knoxville was charismatic with his idiocy and that has led him to a successful career in Hollywood. He has been hilarious in movies like The Ringer and Dukes of Hazzard, and he has also made a name for himself as an executive producer of MTV shows. Who would have thought jousting in shopping carts would be so profitable for him?

Be a Nerd: Comic Con Movies Previews

Posted by Jordan On July - 10 - 2010

Many people think of the San Diego Comic Con as that place where fat guys dress up as Batman and look at each other’s comic book collections. This is only partly true. The San Diego Comic Con has grown far larger than a simple gathering of comic book fans, and has also grown to include types of media other than comic books. One of the biggest parts of the San Diego Comic Con these days is movie previews. Comic book movies have grown very popular, so producers use the San Diego Comic Con as a way to promote their movies before release. This means we get to see sneak peeks of movies and get some extra details on the production process. Here are some of the movies that will be featured, or we at least hope will be featured, at the San Diego Comic Con.

Megamind

Megamind is the latest DreamWorks production. This movie will answer the often asked question of what happens if a villain kills his heroic nemesis. With a cast including Will Ferrell, Jonah Hill, and Brad Pitt, Megamind is looking like it will be quite the entertaining movie. The first day of Comic Con features a panel dedicated to Megamind so we can expect some sneak peeks to be released. Maybe we will also find out why they changed the name of the movie from Oobermind to Megamind after they had released promotional materials.

The Green Hornet

We recently showed The Green Hornet trailer on here, so we can expect there to be a lot more Green Hornet news at Comic Con. I am personally hoping they show off the car used in the movie, a 1966 Imperial nicknamed Black Beauty. Expect another trailer to be released at Comic Con, giving us a better look at how Seth Rogen will handle the hero role. The trailer looks promising, but Comic Con will give us a better idea of what to expect from this movie.

Thor

It is no secret that Marvel is putting out movies featuring major heroes in order to make the big Avengers movie in the future. The Thor movie has been somewhat overshadowed by the Captain America movie, but Comic Con is sure to take a look at both. Chris Hemsworth will be playing the role of Thor, and so far we have just seen one picture of him in costume and no trailer. Hopefully Comic Con will fix that and give us plenty of information on the Norse God of Thunder. I would also like to see some information on Chris Evans and the Captain America movie, such as if Chris Evans will be cracking his usual jokes in this movie. Maybe Marvel will also explain why they like actors named Chris so much, I might have to get a name change.

Salt

San Diego Comic Con isn’t just about comics anymore, and as a result many movie studios bring special sneak peeks of their movies to the convention. One movie that will be featured is Angelina Jolie’s action thriller Salt. It will be interesting to see the Russian spy angle discussed, especially considering the fact the United States just found some real life Russian spies. A case of life imitating art indeed. More importantly, Angelina Jolie still looks super hot.

Deadpool

I don’t know how much Deadpool will be discussed at Comic Con, especially considering the fact that the star of Deadpool, Ryan Reynolds, will be busy promoting his role as Green Lantern over on the DC side of things. It is hard to imagine this movie project not being brought up at some point considering the support given by fans and Ryan Reynolds himself. Hopefully a production schedule will be released at Comic Con, but there is definitely no guarantee on that.

The Expendables

Another non-comic movie that will be featured at Comic Con is The Expendables. I really want to see another trailer for this movie, because it will be three minutes of ass kicking. I don’t care what the plot is, a movie with Arnold Schwarzenegger, Sylvester Stallone, and Jason Statham  is going to be awesome. This is definitely not going to be a movie for intellectuals, but it will be amazing nonetheless.

We here at HumorDistrict will definitely be keeping an eye on movie news coming from the San Diego Comic Con, so you can look forward to updates on all the movies discussed here and more.

World Cup of Movies

Posted by Jordan On June - 12 - 2010

With the opening of the World Cup, the world has gone into a soccer frenzy. Even we Americans, who usually ignore soccer for sports that we dominate, have alarms set for the USA vs. England match. Many of us have even learned the names of up to three players on the US team! With all this soccer excitement, it is the perfect time to look back on some great soccer movies. Soccer movies, like most sports movies, can be tremendously inspirational and entertaining, and these are some of the best.

Goal! The Dream Begins

When it comes to inspirational movies, it doesn’t get much better than Goal! The Dream Begins. This movie follows a young Mexican boy as his family first crosses the border into America and then as he is discovered for his great soccer talent. Not only is it awesome to see a young man’s dreams come true, but the game play scenes are phenomenal.

Bend it Like Beckham

Bend it Like Beckham is an example of how the world’s game can help people overcome racial differences. Jess is a young Indian woman who loves soccer, unfortunately her parents are very traditional and won’t allow her to play. Being a rebellious teenager, she goes behind their backs and joins a team anyways. When she has success with the sport, her parents come around. It just goes to prove that everybody loves a winner.

Victory

Sylvester Stallone is best known for taking down the Soviets in Rocky. A little known fact is that he also took down the Nazis, this time in soccer rather than boxing. Co-Star and soccer great Pele assures the allied soldier’s victory against the Nazis in a soccer match, while Stallone ensures the soldiers’ escape.

Shaolin Soccer

When it comes to pure entertainment, Shaolin Soccer is one of the greatest sports movies ever. It mixes martial arts, soccer, and ridiculous special effects to create a movie that features some of the most outrageous action to ever be seen on the pitch. Anytime a movie features players who can kick a soccer ball through brick walls, you know you’re in for a good time.

The Cup

The Cup is the story of a group of young Tibetan boys who search for a television on which to watch the 1998 World Cup. What could be a better way to spend your time while not watching the World Cup than watching a movie about watching the World Cup? If you are looking for a feel-good movie about soccer, The Cup is where it’s at.

Top 5 Most Anticipated Movies of 2010

Posted by wezzo On January - 1 - 2010

The Expendables

Plot Outline: A team of mercenaries head to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator.

Director: Sylvester Stallone

Cast and Crew: Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Brittany Murphy, Jet Li, Dolph Lundgren

Arnold Schwarzenegger, Mickey Rourke, Jason Statham, Sylvester Stallone, Jet Li, Ivan Drago Dolph Lundgren, Steve Austin and Randy Couture are a team of mercenaries headed to South America on a mission to overthrow a dictator. Christ how badass is that? Watching the trailer though it’s seams to be a Stallone Statham show though with a little Li and Rouke thrown in for good measure. The cameos will sure make up for a great film. Quite possibly the film I’m looking forward to the most but at the same time I know I’ll be let down somewhere.

The Last Airbender

Plot outline: Based on the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender, the story takes place in a world divided into the Fire, Water, Earth, and Air Nations. A young “airbender” named Aang must stop the Fire Nation from taking over.

Director: M. Night Shyamalan

Cast: Noah Ringer, Dev Patel, Cliff Curtis, Jackson Rathbone, Shaun Toub, Aasif Mandvi

It can be a really cool movie, or an epic failure to end all epic failures. M. Night shyamalan eventually bought out its patented thrillers, which is nice since The Happening and Lady in the Water sucked. But he is the kind of big-budget fantasy? Some people have heard of the source material, which mean box office is pretty weak, unless the ad campaign Wows a bunch of people. But it’s cool to see Slumdog Millionaire Dev Patel’s trying to choose a name for himself over the Best Picture winner last year.

A Couple of Dicks

Plot outline: A comedy about two cops who try to locate a stolen baseball card and rescue a kidnapped woman.

Director: Kevin Smith

Cast: Bruce Willis, Tracy Morgan, Seann William Scott, Adam Brody, Kevin Pollak

So this is a cop movie starring a white guy and black guy generic right? Ah, the script is good, enough to attract the director Kevin Smith – who’s never directed a film he hasn’t written. Everyone agrees that the project take adequate wage agreements, to maintain the film’s R-class. This is another possible hangover-style project – but with Bruce Willis on the project you can’t go wrong.

Alice in Wonderland

Plot outline: Tim Burton and Johnny Depp (as the Mad Hatter) take on Lewis Carroll’s classic.

Director: Tim Burton

Cast: Johnny Depp, Mia Wasikowska, Michael Sheen, Anne Hathaway, Helena Bonham Carter, Alan Rickman, Crispin Glover, Christopher Lee

Who better to take on Carroll’s cracked-out, drug-influenced Alice in Wonderland than Burton and Depp? Plus, the six of you who saw the first season of HBO’s In Treatment already know that Mia Wasikowska will give a terrific, star-making performance as Alice. The only red flag? An odd March release date. We thought the combination of Depp and a big budget made for an automatic summer debut.

Arrested Development

Plot: No plot released

Director: Mitchell Hurwitz

Cast and Crew: Michael Cera, Jason Bateman, David Cross, Portia de Rossi, Jeffrey Tambor, Will Arnett
Hands-down the most anticipated movie of 2010, Arrested Development fans have been pining for a big-screen adaptation ever since this ingenious show was kicked off the air (yes, by someone retarded). And after tamping down a slew of rumors about its future, the producers have made it over some hurdles necessary for moving forward, like signing Michael Cera on to the production. But until we start seeing official trailers, we’re just going to assume this one isn’t even coming out, just to stave off the disappointment.

No trailer yet, but I leave you with the famous Chicken Dance montage
